Children's Program

Attending the Atlantic Summer Institute on Healthy and Safe Communities this year? Then please bring your children! It's free for them!

We are pleased to announce that we will once again be offering a Children's Program at the 2012 Atlantic Summer Institute. The Children's Program will parallel that of the adults: “Inspiration to Action: Leadership for Active Communities”.

The Institute believes in inclusion and reducing barriers to participation. We want everyone to get involved with the Institute, so there will be a free, educational and fun program offered to children of registered participants.

The program is designed for children ages 3-14 and is staffed by early childhood educators and / or qualified teachers. Instruction will be available in both official languages.

Please indicate on your registration form that you wish to register your child(ren). A Children's Program registration form is also needed for all children and can be accessed on your registration form or online.

Programme pour les enfants

Participez-vous à l'Institut d'été sur les collectivités sûres et en santé au Canada atlantique cette année?  Si oui, n'oubliez pas que vous pouvez venir avec vos enfants! Notre programme à l'intention des enfants est gratuit!

Nous sommes heureux d'annoncer que nous offrirons à nouveau ce programme à notre Institut 2012.  Le programme, « Leadership pour les collectivités actives: transformer l'inspiration en action », est offert en même temps que celui des adultes.

L'Institut croit en l'inclusion et en la réduction des obstacles à la participation. C'est pourquoi nous voulons que tout le monde participe à     l'Institut et rendons accessible ce programme gratuit à la fois éducationnel et amusant aux enfants des participants inscrits au programme complet de l'Institut.

Le programme à l'intention des enfants est conçu pour les enfants de 3 à 14 et dirigé par des éducateurs de la petite enfance et des professeurs bien qualifiés. L'enseignement sera offert dans les deux langues officielles.

Veuillez indiquer lors de votre inscription que vous désirez inscrire votre(vos) enfant(s).  Un formulaire d'inscription pour les enfants est requis pour tous les enfants et peut être obtenu sur votre formulaire d'inscription ou en ligne.

A limited number of subsidies are available to participants from Atlantic Canada to help with costs associated with attending the Atlantic Summer Institute.

A one-day bilingual Pre-Institute workshop!

Foundations: Preparing to Work Together across Sectors and Cultures
Holland College, Charlottetown, PEI
August 21, 2012

Back by popular demand, a one-day Foundations workshop will be offered on August 21, prior to the ASI Inspiration to Action: Leadership for Active Communities, August 21 - 24.

The Foundations workshop explores frameworks and models for healthy and safe communities. Economic factors, physical and social environments, education, and early childhood development are considered. Research, policy and practice are used to better understand concepts and strategies and to encourage partnering on complex issues and valuing diversity. The Circle of Health© and Aboriginal Medicine Wheel are used to guide discussion and discovery.

This workshop is for those who want a one-day learning event. It is also for those who want to prepare for entering the curriculum workshops at the Atlantic Summer Institute on Healthy and Safe Communities in 2012. 

Participants who complete the workshop and workbook will receive a Certificate of Participation at the Foundations level.

Atelier bilingue préalable d'une journée à l'Institut! 

Fondements : Pour vous préparer à travailler ensemble entre différents secteurs et cultures

Le 21 août 2012

À la demande générale, un atelier d'une journée du volet Fondements sera offert le 21 août, soit un jour avant le programme Leadership pour les collectivités actives : transformation de l'inspiration en action de l'Institut d'été de l'Atlantique, qui sera organisé du 21 au 24 août. 

L'atelier Fondements explorera des cadres de travail et des modèles pour des collectivités sûres et en santé. Les facteurs économiques, les environnements physiques et sociaux, l'éducation et le développement de la petite enfance sont pris en considération. La recherche, la politique et la pratique sont utilisées pour mieux comprendre les concepts et les stratégies et pour encourager les partenariats afin de faire face aux problèmes complexes et de mettre en valeur la diversité. Le Cercle de la santé© et la roue médicinale autochtone sont utilisés pour guider la discussion et la découverte.

Cet atelier s'adresse aux personnes qui souhaitent assister à un atelier d'une journée. Il concerne également les personnes qui souhaitent se préparer à s'inscrire aux ateliers du programme d'apprentissage qui auront lieu à l'Institut d'été sur les collectivités sûres et en santé au Canada atlantique 2012. 

Les participants qui suivent l'atelier et remplissent le carnet de travail recevront un certificat de participation au volet Fondements.

Nathalie Boivin, Ph.D.

“Inspiration to Action: Leadership for Active Communities”



Be inspired by the leadership example and personal achievements of the physically active and actively engaged Nathalie Boivin! Nathalie will share her story of leadership in literacy, health, and school communities and her accomplishments in being a triathlete – and how one contributed to the other. No matter how big or small you believe your contribution to be, you will walk away motivated to make a greater difference in your community and in the lives of people around you.

Nathalie is a dynamic person, who recognized early in life that she enjoyed being involved in community, and has continued to set goals to contribute to a better world.  She strongly believes in lifelong learning and leadership by example; she has pursued her education to a Ph.D. level. Nathalie has competed in 2 Ironman events and is currently training for a third one, while being a fulltime professor with the Nursing Department of Université de Moncton, Shippagan Campus, in the field of Health Promotion. Her work experience, as a Military Nursing officer, professor or consultant, as well as her community involvements - namely the Société santé et mieux-être en français du NB, Mouvement acadien des communautés en santé du NB or with the Bathurst Healthy Community Network – have provided her with a variety of experiences collaborating with people from different sectors. Nathalie enjoys working with people to overcome challenges, as she thinks of them as opportunities to be creative and unveil one’s full potential.

The Opening presentation is a public event hosted by the City of Charlottetown at 7:00 pm, August 21 – all are welcome to attend.  A reception sponsored by the Atlantic Centre of Excellence for Women’s Health will follow. The full Institute runs from August 21 to 24, 2012.

Nathalie Boivin, Ph.D.

« Leadership pour les collectivités actives: transformer l'inspiration en action »

Venez écouter l’exposé inspirant du cheminement personnel d’une femme physiquement active et activement impliquée, Nathalie Boivin. Nathalie témoignera de ses expériences de leader dans les domaines de l’alphabétisme, de la santé et du milieu scolaire ainsi que de ses succès en tant que triathlète - et comment ces deux aspects lui permettent de garder un équilibre. Suite à cette conférence, vous repartirez motiver à faire davantage une différence dans votre communauté et dans la vie des gens dans votre entourage.     

Nathalie est une personne dynamique qui, a tôt fait de réaliser qu’elle aimait participer à la vie de sa communauté et qui, depuis, continue à s’établir des buts afin d’améliorer la qualité de vie dans divers milieux. Elle croit fermement à l’apprentissage à vie et au leadership par l’exemple. À preuve, elle a poussé ses études jusqu’au doctorat. De plus, elle  a participé à deux compétitions d’Ironman et s’entraîne présentement pour une 3e, tout en travaillant comme professeure au Département des Sciences infirmières de l’Université de Moncton, campus de Shippagan, en promotion de la santé. Ses expériences de travail (officier militaire infirmière, professeure et contractuelle) et ses implications communautaires variées notamment auprès de - la Société santé et mieux-être en français du N.-B., le Mouvement acadien des communautés en santé du N.-B. et le Réseau des communautés en santé de Bathurst - l’ont amené à côtoyer des gens de tout horizon. Nathalie aime travailler en équipe pour relever des défis car, selon elle, ça stimule la créativité et permet de mettre à jour le potentiel de chacun.

Cette conférence. à 19 h 00 le 21 août, est une activité ouverte au public et est une gracieuseté de la ville de Charlottetown. Bienvenue à tous! Une réception parrainée par Le Centre d’excellence de l’Atlantique pour la santé des femmes suivra. L’Institut en entier se tient du 22 au 24 août 2012.

This announcement is to inform you that the Call for Presentations for the Atlantic Summer Institute has extended the deadline for submissions. The new date is Monday, 7th May, 2012.

We welcome submissions made in French and/or English. Presentations will be featured during the “Atlantic Community Showcase” to be held on Wednesday, August 22nd, 2012 as part of the Atlantic Summer Institute in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. We will give priority to proposals from Atlantic Canada but we also encourage others to submit ideas.

NEW: Young Women’s Leadership program!

Atlantic Summer Institute (ASI) presents Inspiration to Action: Leadership for Active Communities - three days focusing on comprehensive training to foster leadership for active communities.  This theme aligns with a current ASI project aimed at developing capacity for community leadership amongst women and girls in Atlantic Canada.

Leadership is a critical issue in sustaining communities in the Atlantic Region.  Women and men of all ages are our key resources. Traditionally, the word “active” evokes images of physical activity and individual behaviours.  ASI takes a broader view, focusing on “active communities” rather than individuals, and paying attention to the determinants of health and safety. The program of the 2012 ASI will explore how to influence conditions of people’s lives to promote their level of activity and engagement in their communities, as well as their social and economic inclusion. 

Showcasing leading and promising practices from across Atlantic Canada!

NOUVEAU : Jeunes femmes et leadership communautaire!

L'Institut d'été de l'Atlantique (IEA) présente le programme Transformation de l'inspiration en action : leadership pour les collectivités actives; trois jours de formation complète sur la promotion du leadership dans les collectivités actives. Ce thème s'aligne sur un projet en cours de l'Institut d’été de l’Atlantique visant à développer la capacité de leadership des femmes et des filles au sein des collectivités du Canada atlantique.

Le leadership est un élément crucial pour appuyer les collectivités de la région de l'Atlantique. Les hommes et les femmes de tout âge sont nos ressources clés. Traditionnellement, le terme « actif » évoque des images d'activité physique et de comportements individuels. L'Institut d’été de l’Atlantique emploie cet adjectif au sens large, en se concentrant sur les « collectivités actives » plutôt que sur les différentes personnes et en prêtant attention aux déterminants de la santé et de la sûreté. Le programme de 2012 de l'Institut d’été de l’Atlantique explorera la façon d'influer sur les conditions de vie des personnes, afin de promouvoir leur niveau d'activité et d'engagement dans leur communauté, ainsi que leur inclusion sociale et économique.

Note: The Atlantic Summer Institute has extended the deadline for submissions.

Have you worked in a program or project that was inspired by a great idea? Have you developed an innovative policy to influence the health and safety of your community? Have you seen positive results that you would like to share with others? If yes, we invite you to share your experience with others at the 2012 Atlantic Summer Institute on Healthy and Safe Communities (ASI)!

The ASI is calling for presentations that profile promising practices, programs, policies, experiences or lessons learned that relate to the theme of leadership and active communities, and connect with: gender; social and economic development; crime prevention and community safety; health promotion; and environmental sustainability.

We welcome presentations in French and/or English to be featured during the “Atlantic Community Showcase” Wednesday, August 22nd, 2012 as part of the Atlantic Summer Institute to be held in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. The Atlantic Summer Institute on Healthy and Safe Communities is hosting a gender and community leadership workshop series as part of its project: 'Building Leadership Capacity Among Women and Girls in Atlantic Canada for Action on Underlying Conditions Impacting their Lives, their Families and Communities'.

As a follow-up to the successful 'Symposium on Gender and Community Leadership' held in August 2011, the series of bilingual workshops is being held throughout the region, and will offer a holistic approach to leadership training or that focus on developing knowledge and skills to take intersectoral and cross cultural action on underlying conditions in communities.

The Atlantic Summer Institute on Healthy and Safe Communities (ASI) focuses on building regional capacity for healthy and safe communities by addressing the linkages between the determinants of health and the root causes of crime and victimization. It is a focal point in Atlantic Canada for learning and training; intersectoral networking and collaboration; a facilitator of research; a promoter of healthy and sustainable policies; and a catalyst for social justice and equity.

The ASI's gender and community leadership workshop series addresses the specific needs of women and girls in the context of gender equity, cooperation and collaboration in a future where female and male leaders work together effectively. Over time, the reach of this project will be felt in policies and programs that contribute to healthier, safer, stronger communities.
